Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Spreading over an area of 345 square km, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is the second largest of its kind in Kerala. This huge floral patch is an integral part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, established in 1973. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is neatly divided into two sections, Muthanga and Tholpetty. Muthanga section comes towards the east side of Wayanad district sharing borders with Tamil Nadu and Tholpetty is towards the north sidelined with the Karnataka border. The sanctuary is the most pristine Garden of Eden with a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna, evergreen forests, mountain ranges, streams, waterfalls etc.

This wildlife sanctuary is renowned for introducing the Project Elephant, which resulted in the preservation of the big mammoths. Thus within the borders, one can easily find herds of elephants moving here and there. You can enjoy the scenery upon an elephant ride or hopping onto the jeep safari. Bamboos, Teak, Eucalyptus etc. are abundantly seen in the evergreen forests. Langars, Bonnet Macaques, Bison, Monkeys, Sambar, Malabar squirrel and Forest bears can be regularly spotted sprawling their way through the bamboo groves or teak plantations.

There are numerous amphibians and fishes dwelling in the gurgling streams, 126 species of birds flying in and around the trees and canopies, and reptile species slithering on the grounds of this heavenly ecological garden. It is believed that during the freedom struggles this wildlife sanctuary had housed Pazhassiraja, the lion of Kerala, who stood his ground against the raging powers of the British army. He initiated guerilla war-fare in our lands equipping the tribal communities. Amidst the greenery patches, free-flowing natural brooks, swaying tree groves and breezy air one can cherish the happiest moments of a lifetime.
