Wayanad Heritage Museum

Wayanad Heritage Museum also known by the name, Ambalavayal Heritage Museum is one of the best archaeological museums in all Kerala. It is situated at Ambalavayal, which is 12 km away from Sultan Bathery in Wayanad district. The museum is a collection of numerous relics dating back to the 2nd century A.D. It was the combined effort of the archaeological department and college students who helped in unearthing the historically significant relics and artefacts from different parts of the region. Since the collection was wide enough they decided to build a museum to preserve these bits of items that proudly trace back the history, different ages and civilisations we have gone through the years.

The whole museum, under the control of the District Tourism Promotion Council, has been divided into four sections: Veerasmruthi, Gothrasmrithi, Devasmruthi and Jeevanasmruthi. Veerasmruthi block has different types of pictorial stone edifices called “Veerakallu” or Hero stones, dedicated to the warriors of the ancient era. Gothrasmruthi and Jeevanasmruthi have tribal entities like tribal headgear, jewellery, hunting and fishing weapons, musical instruments etc. The final block Devasmruthi would be the area archaeological students would be interested in, as they have relics from the Neolithic age to the 17th-century items like stone idols, sculptures, terracotta figurines, local artworks, potteries, weapons etc.

In addition to the exhibits, the museum has a multi-media room that screens documentaries and docudramas related to the museum. All in all, the Wayanad Heritage Museum is a real storehouse of ancient artefacts that fascinates each and every visitor and takes them back to the Megalithic era, into our roots and origins.
