Vellayani Lake, popularly known as Vellayani Kayal in the regional language Malayalam, is the largest freshwater lake in Thiruvananthapuram. The lake is abundant with varieties of flora and fauna, exquisitely explored on a boat ride or a sidewalk. It has a natural ecosystem of its own.
An ancient history is entangled with the origin of this lake, and the tales goes like this. Once there was a beggar dying for water to quench his thirst, and he approached a meditating saint who had no water left in his pot. The saint took the remaining few drops into his palm and threw the water droplets as far as he could after chanting a small prayer. The miraculous mantra worked the spot where the water drops fell, and turned itself into a lake that later came to be known as Vellayani Lake.
Two pilgrim centres adorn the banks of Vellayani Lake with the divine spirit, Vevila Vishnu Temple and Vellayani Devi Temple. The streaming water of this lake is utilized for irrigation, farming, and drinking purposes by the local inhabitants. It is wonderful to visit Vellayani Lake for its calm and serene atmosphere, perfectly rejuvenating for the minds of the visitors.
