Thrissur Zoo and the State Museum separated by a narrow road in between are both situated in the heart of Thrissur city. The zoo, earlier known as “Trichur zoo”, has an approximate area of 13.5 acres of land, established in 1885. The zoo is quite famous among the locals and other tourists from different parts of the country and abroad, for the constant addition of new and rare species into its preservation. There is a variety of fauna in this zoo including, lion-tailed macaque, sloth bear, monkeys, pink flamingos, deer, tigers etc.
Within the zoo premises, there is a reptile house dedicated specifically to the snake varieties of cobras, rat snakes, king cobras, vipers, pythons etc. Apart from the rare fauna, Thrissur zoo has plenty of others to entertain the visitors such as Zoological garden, Botanical garden, a National History Museum and an Art Museum. They are open on all days except Mondays.
The Art Museum very near to the zoo compound has an exquisite collection of wooden carvings, metal sculptures, Kathakali figures, ancient jewellery, swords, rocks etc. With all its varied collections and fauna varieties, a trip to Thrissur zoo is an educational experience for the school children and families. The zoo and the museum stay primarily showcasing the socio-cultural heritage of our nation. The animals in the zoo are extremely excited to see the visitors and are always in full mood to interact with the lovely tourists. All the attractions of the zoo promise a wonderful time with the pristine charm of nature and the richness of our Kerala culture and heritage.
