It is believed that the idol of Lord Rama initially belonged to Lord Krishna of Dwaraka.
He worshipped the deity and upon his salvation to the heavens and subsequent drowning of Dwaraka city into the sea, the idol was lost in the depth of the ocean. It was later recovered by some fishermen and presented to a feudal landlord Vakkayil Kaimal who had decided to install the idol in a temple near the river banks. There is always a lamp kept burning behind the idol, which is believed to have powers to relieve devotees of any evil spirits.
