Thiruvanchikulam Mahadeva Temple

Thiruvanchikulam Mahadeva temple located in Kodungallur, Thrissur is also known by the name Thiruvan Jai Kalam temple. The temple is believed to have been built around the 8th century during the Chera Dynasty and Cheraman Perumal was behind the construction of the temple. Lord Shiva the main deity of the temple is worshipped as Mahadeva and his wife Parvathy as Umadevi.  It is one of the 276 Shiva temples mentioned in Tamil Literature, Teevaram, written by the Nayanmars. 

All the 276 Shiva temples are together known as Paadal Petra Sthalam, found on Nayanmars journey to Kailash. Thiruvachikulam Mahadeva temple is the only Shaivite temple from Kerala mentioned in this ancient canon. The temple is constructed in Kerala architectural pattern and is a real beauty to experience. Lord Shiva of this temple was also the family God of the Cochin Royal Family that came into power after the decline of the Chera Dynasty. 

One of the major attractions of the temple includes a Namaskara Mandapam situated right in front of the Sreekovil with a total of 16 pillars. This well-preserved temple has numerous mural paintings, wooden carvings and sculptures that are well appreciated by historians, artists, and tourists. Different Palliyara pooja offerings are attended by millions of devotees to attain blessings of the deity. 

The ten-day festival of Vaikasi Pournami Brahmotsavam which takes place during the month of Edavam (May-June) is the most prominent festival of the temple celebrated with much grandeur.
