Thirunelli Temple

Thirunelli Temple

Thirunelli Temple, located in a valley surrounded by hills and forests was a great pilgrim centre in ancient times. There are no records showing the actual construction date of the temple. The temple stands on the side of Brahmagiri hills stretching along the borders of Karnataka. The temple is named so because Nelli means gooseberry, a fruit of the Amla tree. Legend says that the idol of Lord Vishnu was found under an amla tree by Lord Brahma upon his evening stroll.

The temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu has a stream flowing from Brahmagiri hills on the blessings of Lord Brahma. The river is called “Papanashini”, the stream that washes away all the worldly sins. Devotees strongly believe that a dip in this sacred pool is sure to wash away all the sins. And there is a Shiva Cave in the backyard of the temple. Thus, one of the most peculiarities of the temple is that it is blessed by all three of the Gods – Tridev– Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The temple is also referred to as the South Kashi, as one can perform the rites for their deceased one.

It is said that Lord Prasurama paid a visit to the Thirunelli temple and performed the last rites for his father sage Jamadagani. There is a sacred rock called pippa para upon which the Bali is conducted. The temple pond is unique for it has a stone slab in the centre that possesses the footprints of Lord Vishnu called Panchatheertham. With the traditional, classical and Kerala architecture along with the historical

significance, Thirunelli temple is one among the most visited pilgrim centres in Wayanad.
