Thirunavaya Navamukunda Temple

Thirunavaya Navamukunda Temple is one of the ancient temples in Kerala mentioned in Tamil Epic Literature, Divya Prabandha, written by Vaishnava Alvars. This historically significant temple is located in Thirunavaya village about 8 km away from Tirur town in Malappuram. The temple residing on the northern banks of Bharathapuzha is dedicated to Navamukunda – Narayana Vishnu. The temple is quite popular at Kashi for performing rituals for the deceased ones.

This Navamukunda temple is famous for the Mamankam festival that takes place once in every 12 years since 8th century A.D. Pazhukka Mandapam is the structure made for the Zamorins – the monarchs of Kozhikode Kingdom- for witnessing the Mamankam festival. The temple has been renovated a couple of times after being attacked by Tipu Sultan’s army during the invasion and later at the time of Mappila Rebellion. The present Kerala style architecture was built by Vetah Raja. Even though the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, sub-shrines of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi are seen near the temple complex.
