THATTEKAD

Thattekad, nestled in Kerala’s lush landscape, is a haven for wildlife lovers, birdwatchers, and adventure seekers. Its diverse ecosystems make it one of India’s top destinations for ecotourism. The region is known primarily for the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, a hotspot for birdwatching and biodiversity, but it offers much more to visitors.

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary

Also known as the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, this reserve was established by Dr. Salim Ali, India’s “Birdman,” in 1983. He called it the richest bird habitat in peninsular India. Over 280 species of birds can be found here, including the Malabar Grey Hornbill, Sri Lankan Frogmouth, and Black Baza.

The Hornbill

The Hornbill derives its name from its headshield or casque which is drawn in two parts over its giant yellow bill.The “whoosh” sound made by the flapping wings of this big bird can be heard hundred of meters away

In our literature and myth it is called “chataka” that does Tapas with uplifted bill for the benison of the rain.

It is a strictly monogamous bird mating for life.

Trails of Thattekad

  1. Salim Ali Trail: This popular birdwatching trail winds through the heart of the sanctuary. Ideal for both beginners and seasoned birders, the trail offers sightings of rare species like the Malabar Trogon, Orange-headed Thrush, and Rufous Babbler. The dense canopy and tranquil atmosphere make it perfect for spotting elusive birds while soaking in the serenity of nature.
  2. Black Baza Trail: Named after the majestic Black Baza bird, this trail takes you deeper into the forest, offering a chance to spot this striking bird of prey. The trail is known for its diversity of raptors and other forest-dwelling birds, making it a favorite among experienced birders.
  3. Trogon Trail: This trail is designed to spot the colorful and elusive Malabar Trogon, a bird that hides in the dense forest canopy. The trail meanders through the tropical evergreen forest, offering not only birdwatching but also encounters with Thattekad’s unique flora and fauna.

Watch Towers

  1. Frogmouth Watch Tower: Named after the enigmatic Sri Lankan Frogmouth, this tower offers a great vantage point for spotting these nocturnal birds. From here, you can also observe other night creatures and experience the forest in a different light as dusk sets in.
  2. Hornbill View Tower: The best spot to view various species of hornbills, particularly the Malabar Grey Hornbill and the Great Hornbill. From this tower, visitors can get a bird’s eye view of the forest canopy, where these majestic birds often roost or forage for food.

Butterfly Garden

The Butterfly Garden at Thattekad adds another layer of biodiversity to the region’s natural offerings. Home to more than 100 species of butterflies, this beautifully maintained garden is a peaceful spot where visitors can enjoy the vibrant colors and intricate designs of butterflies fluttering around. Rare species such as the Southern Birdwing and Malabar Banded Swallowtail can be seen here, making it a favorite spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts.

Paid Nature Camps

For those seeking an immersive experience, Thattekad offers Paid Nature Camps that allow visitors to stay overnight in the sanctuary. These camps are perfect for learning about Thattekad’s ecosystems and wildlife, with guided nature walks, birdwatching tours, and educational activities led by experts. Bhoothathankettu Dam

Just a short drive away, the Bhoothathankettu Dam is another must-visit attraction. Surrounded by dense forests and steeped in mythological lore, it’s an excellent spot for picnics, trekking, and boating. The serene ambiance and stunning views of the Periyar River make it a perfect complement to the more adventurous Thattekad experience.
