Thangal Hills

Thangal Hills, locally known as Thangal Para, is located in the border of the Kottayam and Idukki districts near Vagamon. This hill is famous for the huge round rock, blue mountains, clear waterfalls etc. Thangal hills is a major pilgrimage site for Muslims, as there is a mausoleum of Sheikh Fariduddin. The legend behind this site is that around 800 years ago, Sheikh Fariduddin Baba and his 40 followers came here and preached the words of Muhammad Nabi. His teachings became popular among the locals and many came in to hear him. Thus, he decided to stay there till his last breath.

After his death, his sacred body was buried on the hilltop and a mausoleum was built by his followers in his loving memory. Since then, the place became an important part of Muslim pilgrim centres. On the festival of Urs, the whole area is lit up with diyas and decorated with ribbons for the grand festival. Thousands of devotees come to Thangal Hills to pay respect and homage to the Sufi saint. Ganjusakkar, a special sweet dish is being prepared and served to the guests during the festival. There is a mosque down the hill, where the devotees and locals offer daily prayers.
