Sree Madiyan Koolom Temple located in Kanhangad, Kasargod district is one of the famous ancient temples more than 500 years old. The temple is known to be dedicated to “Kshetrapalaka” Eswaran and “Kalaratri Amma” the furious form of Goddess Bhadrakali. The ancient temple is quite famous for the age-old wooden carvings and famous epics poems that celebrated the unity and harmony of different religions and castes.
This temple was quite popular in earlier times, as it allowed the entry of lower caste Hindus, even before the Temple Proclamation Act came by. Bhairavan and Bhagavathi are the other deities worshipped in the temple. There is a peculiarity in the way rituals and poojas are held, they are done by Brahmins in the noon and a section of Hindus called Maniyanis in the mornings and evenings.
One of the legends says that Kshetrapalakan Eswaran once reached the temple and sat on the lap of the Goddess and decided to settle next to her in the sanctum. It is how the name Madiyan came by because in Malayalam “Madi” means “lap”. The festivals of the temple are celebrated by all people in Kasargod regardless of their religion, caste or creed. In all the festivals, “Bootham” a traditional dance form is the major highlight of the celebrations.
