A captivating greenish wilderness, Shenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary, established in the year 1984, resides on the gigantic warmth of the Western Ghats in Kollam district. The name of the Wildlife Sanctuary ‘Shenduruny’ came from an endemic species of tree, Chenkuruny or Shenkuruny (Gluta travancorica), widely seen within this forest ranges.
Spread over an area of 172 square kilometres, the sanctuary inhabits wide varieties of flora and fauna. This tropical evergreen forest is a heavily protected zone providing a natural habitat for exotic plants, birds and animals. It is an ideal spot for wildlife lovers, photography specialists, archaeologists, biologists etc. The lush greenery is a delightful spectacle offering a beautiful gaze at the wonders of nature.
Shenduruny Sanctuary claims to own an artificial lake of 18 square kilometres in size, surrounded by the reservoir of Thenmala Dam. Some of the recent archaeological studies have claimed that Shenduruny is the cradle of one of the oldest river valley civilizations in India, which is considered to be older than the Indus Valley civilization, that dates from 4400-3700 B.C.
Shenduruy Wildlife Sanctuary is a treasure trove of recreational activities such as trekking trails within the evergreen forest, diverse safari options to see herds of wild animals like deer, leopards, macaques, monkeys, bison etc., magnificent views from Kurumthotti top-huts, a natural spa at the streams of Pallivaasal etc.
