Rosamala

Rosamala, one of the most unexplored tourist destinations in Kerala, is situated at a distance of 15 km from Aryankavu Junction, Kollam. This least explored spot is deep within the forests of Shenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary. Rosamala is inglorious with its small patch of green land surrounded by mountain streams, rich varieties of flora and fauna, and lush hills. The land of Rosamala is in the shape of unfurling rose petals, thus the name “rosemala” came into existence.

Rosamala can only be reached through 10 km of trekking through the dense forest. It would be a thrilling experience for an adventure enthusiast. Trekking starts from a pond inside Rosemala known as Darbhakkulam, “darbha” is the name of Poa cynosuroides, a plant which is very significant while performing Hindu rituals. It is said that once the pond was filled with darbha flowers, thus the name came in. On the way to the pond, visitors can watch the rich diversity of butterflies, frogs and mushrooms. The clear surface of the water mirrors the trees and hills surrounding the lake.

Boating through the lake is a captivating experience, as the calm water waves would turn rough gradually. It is the meeting place of three rivers Umayar, Shenduriniyar and Uriliyar, it’s beautiful to see one river merging into the other. Another peculiar attraction is the water tower, that bestows a magnificent view of Thenmala Dam, fascinating valley, mountain tops, etc.

There is another gripping story about Rosamala. It is believed that a British man bought an estate in this jungle and named it after his wife Roselyn. In the later years, people started settling in the village, and at present, there are about 250 families in Rosamala. It is a fine example of eco-living, where people live in harmony with nature and its powers. Trekk your way into Rosamala to experience the grandeur of mother nature.
