Ramakkalmedu hills, located at a distance of 40 km from Thekkady and just 16 km from Nedumkandam is one of the famous tourist attractions in the Idukki district. The place has a strong mythological association. It is believed that Lord Rama, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the Indian Epic, Ramayana, came to this region upon his search for his wife Sita Devi, who was abducted by Ravana, the king of Lanka. Rama had stepped on one of the huge rocks here, leaving his footprints on the rock, thus the place gained the name “Rama-Kal-Medu”.

Ramakkalmedu is also famous for turtle rock, frog rock and the famous twin statues of Kuravan and Kurathi. They are the names of two people representing the
