Puttu and Kadala – A Match Made in God’s Own Country

Kerala breakfasts have always been an underrated part of Indian cuisine. Once you try it, it can feel like a warm hug in the morning. Among all the yummiest options, Puttu and Kadala hold a special place in the hearts of Malayalis.

Puttu

Puttu is a steamed funnel-shaped rice cake made with rice flour and shredded coconut. It just uses 4 ingredients: the rice flour, shredded coconut, some water, and a pinch of salt. Once the rice flour is mixed with water and salt, it is layered with coconut shavings into a special funnel-like vessel called the putu kutti. And the result is steamy soft puttu.

Kadala Curry

The spicy and creamy Kadala Curry is made with black chickpea, which is known as kadala in Kerala. This curry has a coconut-based gravy and has a mixture of several Indian spices, including mustard seeds and curry leaves. There are varieties of Kadala curry from semi-dry to full gravy.

What makes Puttu and Kadala Special?

Both Puttu and Kadala curry are healthy in multiple ways. Puttu is steamed and prepared with no oil, and it is gluten-free as well. While Kadala curry is protein-packed, rich in fiber, and both these dishes are plant-based, hence ideal for vegetarians and vegans, it is a perfectly balanced meal. Puttu is easy to absorb, hence offering a great texture and taste to the dish along with the gravy.

Easter Egg

You can pair Puttu not only with Kadala curry but also with Plantain, giving it a sweet twist, or with Pappadams and Pickle, giving it an extra kick of spice and crunch.
