Pullichira Church

Pullichira church is situated on the banks of Pullichira lake in the village of Mayyanad. Pullichira’s Immaculate Conception Church is under the diocese of Kollam. The church’s origin dates back to the early 16th century,  built by Portuguese merchants. There is a beautiful myth behind the origin of the church in Pullichira.

During the 16th century, a Portuguese ship was caught in a storm that formed in the Arabian sea. The sailors feared that the ship would wreck completely and sink to the bottom of the sea without a possible come back. Thus, they decided to throw heavy objects into the water to lighten the ship. The prayer room of the ship had an idol of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, unwillingly the sailors wrapped the sacred idol and threw it into the sea. As soon as the idol touched the water, the storm ceased and the sea calmed down.

The rejoiced sailors decided to build a church dedicated to Our Lady of Immaculate Conception. Once during the worship hours, the priest received a revelation that the idol of the Holy Mother must face east, thus regional praises like “Kizhakku Nooki Amma or Mala Nooki Amma” emerged. The annual feast of the church is a famous festival during the second and third week of December, which attracts thousands of devotees irrespective of their faith and religious beliefs. Visit the church to receive the blessings of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception
