Pothundi Dam

Pothundi Dam constructed in the 19th century is one of the oldest dams in Kerala. The dam is built over River Padipuzha and River Meeniciladipuzha, which are the major tributaries of the Aylampuzha River. The dam is built in Pothundy village upon the tremendous backdrop of Nelliyampathy Hills, spreading across 30 square kilometers into the thick forests filled with teak wood trees.

The dam was built to provide water facilities for 5,470 hectares of land in Palakkad district. Nemmara, Ayalur, and Melarcode panchayats in the district depend on the Pothundi dam for their drinking water supplies. The dam is quite peculiar with the fact that the core walls are made up as a mixture of jaggery and quick lime, which is an engineering marvel indeed.

You may feel like taking a day break from the usual stuff, Pothundi dam could be on your list of places to visit on a bright sunny day. As the place is enclosed within nature offering you boating facilities and comfortable sit on the banks envisioning the beauty of Nelliyampathy hills from a considerable distance.
