From the very smallest to the largest, one can spot many kinds of flora or fauna species in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary that stretches around 777 square km in the Idukki district. If God’s own country state has a mini version of itself, it would be the Periyar Reserve with its undulating hills, dense forests, rivers, streams, amazing wildlife etc. This wildlife sanctuary got its name from the Periyar River that originates from this reserve flowing within and around it nurturing and nourishing the entire animals in the forest.

Bamboo rafting, in which a maximum of 5 visitors can raft along the pristine waters envisioning the best of forest in close proximity, nature walk and trekking trails, where the tourists can actually walk along the jungle roads and witness the splendours of nature, border hiking, where the tourists can hike to the borders and enjoy the view of loft slopes, etc are some of the highlights of this wildlife sanctuary.
Most indigenous natives of the region live within the reserve in harmony with nature. There are about 6 tribal communities Mannans, Paliyans, Malayarayans, Mala Pandarams, Uralis and Ulladans, settled within the borders of the reserve. They offer the best one-hour tribal dance for the tourists that often starts with an introduction about the tribal communities, dance forms, musical instruments, costumes etc. Tourists always seem extremely interested in interacting with the tribal communities and clicking photos with them, of them etc.
There are stay over programmes available at Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary with accommodations arranged within the eco-cottages made of bamboo. There are around 15 bamboo huts with double bedded occupancy and modern furnishing for the comfortable stay of the tourists. You can choose between bullock cart rides or jeep safaris or elephant safaris for a great tour through the dense jungles.
