Panchalimedu

Panchalimedu Hill Station

One of the most truly pure and pristine hill stations in Kerala, Panchalimedu stands high among the valleys near Kuttikkanam, Idukki district. This hill station is peculiar with its historical significance in close association with the ancient mythologies of India. It is believed that the Pandavas in our Epic Mahabharata, had lived in this region upon their 14 years of exile in forests. There is a cave within the spot which has the footprints of Bhima, the son of the wind god, the third among the five brothers.

There is also a pond within the premises, known as “Panchali Kulam”, the myth says that Draupadi or Panchali, the wife of Pandavas bathed herself in this pond. With them spending their days here, the place came to be known as Panchalimedu. There is also a small temple dedicated to Bhuvaneshwari with shiva lingas, naga idols, Trishul etc. seen inside. The view from this hill station is magnificent with sky-high hills, valleys, mountains etc. Panchalimedu was renovated as part of the eco-tourism project by the Kerala government. It is maintained by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC).

From the western side, the cliff points towards Mundakayam and Kanjirapally. Ardent Hindu devotees visit Panchalimedu during Makar Sankranti because the makaravilakku or makara jyothi that appears on the Ponnambalamedu near Sabarimala can be witnessed from here. Upon a clear day, the sea can also be spotted. In all, Panchalimedu offers a great refreshment for your body and soul with amazing views and greenery in close relation with the ancient beliefs and mythologies.
