Ottamthullal (or Ottanthullal) is one of the lesser-known yet one of the most enjoyable traditional folk art forms of Kerala. It is a solo dance form with a humorous element drawing similarities with Kathakali in its costumes, facial makeup and hand gestures, hence also known as ‘Common Man’s Kathakali’.
Origin
Ottamthullal was introduced in the 18th century by Kunchan Nambiar, a famous Malayalam poet, as a response or protest to the traditional elitist performance called the Chakyar Koothu, which was conducted in Sanskrit and was often kept from the common people. Kunchan Nambiar used Malayalam in this art form and wrapped social issues and criticism with wit and sarcasm. Old sayings and folklore are also included. Thus, making this art form accessible and entertaining.
The Performance
Ottamthullal performance includes,
A solo performer, who wears green face paint and a colourful costume and headpiece, acts and dances with fast-paced dance steps and exaggerated face and hand gestures.
There will be two to three musicians usually playing the instruments such as the mridangam and idakka.
The theme of the performance mostly revolves around the Hindu epics, like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, but with a satirical and social twist. This also includes modern-day references for relevance.
Relevance
Ottamthullal is still relevant as it is adaptable and thus can be used to speak about today’s social issues and culture. It is not as rigid as most classical art forms, thus giving the viewers a space to laugh, think and engage. It is also history wrapped in tradition and is an example that tradition can be loud and fun. This art form reflects the society we live in.
