Niranam Church

Niranam St. Mary’s Orthodox church located at a distance of 6 km from Thiruvalla, Pathanamthitta is one of the ancient churches in Kerala. The church commonly known as Niranam church is one among the seven and a half churches established by St. Thomas, the Apostle of India, in A.D 52. Since the church was built at that era, the interiors and other architectural designs adopted a Hindu style and pattern. 

Niranam is also the birthplace of famous social reformers and poets, who were popularly known under the brand name of “Kannassa Kavikal”. They were famous for their translation works. They have translated many significant texts from Sanskrit to Malayalam, the most renowned was “Kannassaramayanam”, the translation of the Indian epic, Ramayana

Inside Niranam church there are 5 altars in total, the one at the center is the largest one dedicated to Saint Mary. On the right side of the entrance, there is a granite cross with several engravings on the base. Niranam perunnal, the annual festival, attracts thousands of devotees to the church. Even though the church is dedicated to Saint Mary, the feast of St.Thomas is the major festival in the church.
