Nilambur Teak Museum

Nilambur Teak Museum located about 4 km away from Nilambur in Malappuram district, is very unique in its very core as it is the only Teak Museum in the whole country. Established in the year 1995 by the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) within their campus, it provides all the nook and corner information about the scientific, artistic, and historical levels of teaks in our country. Teaks are an important part of our Kerala culture as even the term “Teak” came from the Malayalam word “Thek”.

Teak plantations, trading, and sales have always been part of our system. Nilambur is also famous for 1840’s Nilambur Teak Plantation built by the British that spread around 2.3 hectares of land. Anyway back to the museum, upon entering you are welcomed by a 55-year-old intricate teak root system. The first floor of this two-storey building is dedicated to the study of Kannimara Teak, which is the oldest naturally grown variety of teak in our lands. A detailed study of the bark, flower and fruit of teak displayed out for you, makes your trip to the museum a real educational one about teaks.

A huge stump of a 480-year-old teak is set for public display, along with an old marine vessel called Uru made of teak wood and different teak poles of varied sizes. Apart from the huge amount of information on this variety of tree, the museum has an exclusive array of butterflies, moths and insects that are mostly seen around a teak plantation. A display of the traditional tools used for teak harvesting that are apparently 160 years old along with a library, a mini theatre and a herbal garden are other major attractions of Nilambur Teak Museum. Visit this unique structure located in Malappuram district to know all about the teak varieties extensively.
