The southern low hills of Western Ghats host a scenic beauty of natural vegetation, Neyyar Dam and Wildlife Sanctuary, spread over an area of 128 sq. km, located within a distance of 32 km from Trivandrum. The far-reaching acres of natural vegetation is an ideal picnic spot for families, groups of friends, solo trippers etc. The dam is built over the Neyyar river, which is the source of Kallar, Mullayar and Karavaliyar rivers (tributaries).
Neyyar inhabits a wide variety of flora and fauna species like tiger, leopard, sloth bear, elephant, sambar, barking deer, bonnet macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Nilgiri tahr etc. From fauna and flora to amphibians to varied medicinal herbs, Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a reservoir of biodiversity.
Apart from the splendid landscapes, slopes and hills, Sanctuary also hosts a Deer Park, Lion Safari Park, Bus Safari, Crocodile Farm, Elephant Rehabilitation Centre, an Ashram for yoga enthusiasts, a beautiful Watchtower and many more. The most agreeable months to visit Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary would be September to March, as the weather conditions are far more favourable. A perfect trip to Wildlife Sanctuary could be accompanied by mesmerizing sightseeing, boating, elephant ride and trekking adventures.
For the ardent trekking lovers, Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary offers two-guided trekking trails to Menmutty Falls and Theerthakkara–Puivizhuthan Chuna, both beginning with Kombai boat cruise offering enchanting views of the area.
