In the proximity of the Zoological park, there resides a National History Museum and Napier Museum in the nearby compounds. Napier Museum was established at the core of the city around 150 years ago. It is a historical building with ancient artifacts and antique architectural styles. It is famous among the tourist attractions in Trivandrum for its collection of ancient ornaments, bronze idols, ivory carvings, musical instruments, etc.
The museum is named so after John Napier, former Madras Governor-General. The architecture of the building is a distinct and unique attraction for its blend of Indian, Chinese, Kerala, and Mughal schools of architecture. The museum has the world-famous paintings of Raja Ravi Varma, Russian theosophist, Nicholas Roerich, certain fine specimens from Tanjore and Mughal arts, and Chinese, Japanese, and Tibetian artists have also contributed works to enhance the worth of the museum. The works of Raja Ravi Varma and Roerich are displayed in the Sree Chithira Gallery, established by Sree Chithira Thirunal in 1935.
