Munakkal beach is the largest shore in Thrissur district, upon the coast of Arabian sea. It is located at a distance of 45 km away from Thrissur town in Azhikode near Kodungallur. The beachline and the coastal tourism near Munakkal beach was created as part of a tsunami rehabilitation programme by the Harbour Engineering Department. The beach is very near to Mar Thoma Shrine, in Kodungallur, which is a popular religious centre where St.Thomas first landed on Indian soil.
Munakkal beach with its 400-metre open auditorium set up for numerous cultural events, 1300 meter walkway for evening strolls, toilets, food courts, rain shelter and a skateboard grip for adventurous kids are the major attractions near the beach shore. Adding to the beguiling beauty of the beach, Kerala Tourism Department had set up a casuarina forest on Munakkal beachline. One can always spot numerous Chinese fishing nets hanging in the lake.
