Mukhathala Murari temple in Kollam district is unique in its architecture as well as in its peculiar mode of worship. It has only main deity Maha Vishnu and no other suv deities as in other temples.
Located on Kulathupuzha
The temple is characterized by the following features:
- Sopanam: The temple features a traditional entrance known as “Sopanam,” a flight of steps leading to the sanctum sanctorum. The Sopanam often has intricate carvings and is a significant element in Kerala temple architecture.
- Namaskara Mandapam: In front of the sanctum, there is usually a Namaskara Mandapam, which is a raised platform where devotees can offer their prayers. The mandapam often has detailed woodwork and sometimes houses oil lamps.
- Chuttambalam: The temple complex includes a Chuttambalam, which is a covered walkway that encircles the sanctum. This structure protects the sanctum and provides space for circumambulation (pradakshina) by devotees.
- Gopuram: The entrance tower, or Gopuram, is another distinct feature. Though not as tall as those seen in Tamil Nadu temples, the Gopuram in Kerala temples like Mukhathala Sri Krishna Temple is usually less elaborate but still beautifully crafted, with a tiled roof and intricate wooden carvings.
- Sanctum Sanctorum (Sreekovil): The sanctum sanctorum, known as Sreekovil, is where the main deity is housed. The Sreekovil is typically square-shaped and made from granite or laterite stones. The roof of the Sreekovil is usually conical and covered with copper plates.
