Muchundi mosque is one of the oldest mosques in the district built around the 13th century in Kuttichira, Kozhikode, south of the other famous Mishkal Mosque and Kuttichira Tank. This 13th century architecture was built on the property of the Zamorins, the rulers of Kozhikode. The granite slab with ancient Malayalam script, Vattezhuthu, is the only existing document that tells about the abundant help and support provided by the Hindu king.
The mosque is yet peculiar with its Temple model architecture, double-tiered roof, ceilings filled with floral woodworks, pillars with engravings and carvings of animals shout out the heavy influence of Hindu culture. A lot of verses from the Holy Quran are engraved on the ceiling with floral designs on the sides. The inscriptions hint that the mosque was built by a Shab al-din Rahan. “Muchundi” could be the Malayalam substitute of the word “Rahan”.
The high-class Muslim aristocracy family called “Muchintakam” resides very adjacently to the mosque courtyard. A traditional tomb called “Muchiyante Jaram” is found near the mosque. This grave is an added attraction to the devotees, who come for prayers in the mosque. Visit Muchundi mosque for its ancient temple style architecture and distinguished history in Kozhikode district.
