Malom Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the smallest yet astonishing protected areas in Kerala, residing in a village called Malom on the slopes of the Western Ghats in Kasargod district. The place gained its name “Malom” from the Malayalam word “Malakalude Lokam”, which can be translated as “the world of hills”. As the name suggests the place is filled with hills and valleys and the famous Malom Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in between Ranipuram and Kottancheri Hills.
The wildlife sanctuary is a typical example of tropical evergreen rain forests in Kerala with a rich biodiversity. Different species of birds, animals, reptiles and other small organisms live in harmony with each other without much human interference. Wild pig, slender loris, rhesus monkey, panther, mongoose, wild buffalo, flying squirrel etc. are the animal varieties and the bird categories include Malabar hornbill, peacock, grey hornbill, owl etc.
