Situated at a distance of 13 km from Kasargod town, at Kumbala, there resides an ancient Sri Gopalakrishna temple with historical significance. Kumbala was the stronghold of the Kumble kings, whose coronation was done at this Gopalakrishna temple. The local beliefs regarding the idol of Gopalakrishna in jet black granite state that the idol belonged to the foster mother of Sree Krishna, Yashoda. This glorious idol with childish features was believed to have been presented by Lord Krishna himself to the sage Kanva Maharshi who installed it in the current location where the temple stands.
It is said that the temple established by Kanva Maharshi has the holiness and sacredness of three yugas of Treta, Dwapara and Kali-yuga.
