The present-day Kumarakom bird sanctuary was first established as a rubber plantation by Alfred George Baker, thus it was widely known as Baker’s estate. Visitors can spot diverse species of native birds such as waterfowls, cuckoos, egrets, herons, Brahminy Kites, cormorants, etc. Indian cormorants, popularly known as “Indian shags” are most commonly found in and around the sanctuary and over the backwaters. The migratory birds arrive from the Himalayas and as far from Siberia in different seasons. During the winter season, due to the chilling coldness, birds flew from the Himalayas to our most favorable climatic conditions in Kerala. Some of the migratory birds include Siberian cranes, parrots, flycatchers, teal, lark, etc.
