Kulamavu Dam is one of the three dams created as part of the Idukki hydroelectric power project. Kulamavu dam located near the Idukki arch dam is one of the favourite tourist attractions in Idukki. The dams were built in 1977 on the Periyar river and are the major sources of electricity at the powerhouse of Moolamattom. This 100 feet water level built on the Periyar river stretches out to about 33 square km between the rocky mountains and tall hills.
Kulamavu Dam offers a magnificent view to the visitors with the surrounding hill stations, picaresque countryside, variant flora and fauna, tea and rubber plantations, etc. The construction of these three dams forms a 60 km square artificial lake that further enhances the scenic beauty of the place.
