Korapuzha, also known by the name Elathur river, is a famous water attraction in Kozhikode district. Korapuzha is a confluence of two rivers, Akalapuzha and Poonoor puzha that originates from the high mountains of Wayanad district. Korapuzha carries the waters from the rivers, flows through the district for about 40 km and then empties it into the Arabian sea in Elathur.
There is a beautiful legend behind the huge rock, Anappara, in the river. It is said that once an elephant stepped into the serene waters of Korapuzha and got transformed into this giant rock in the size of an elephant, that continues to attract many tourists to the vicinity of the river. Korapuzha is part of the West Coast Inland Navigation System.
Many fun activities like boating and water sports are allowed within the sweet flowing waters of Korapuzha. Upon your cruise, you can get a scenic view of the traditional fishing methods, chemmeen kettu and irumeen kettu, on both sides of the river. Korapuzha is the venue of the famous “Korapuzha Jatolsav”, a grand water festival in Kerala. This river divides North Malabar from South Malabar. In addition to the charming sights, there is a 480-meter bridge built on top of the Korapuzha, which is the largest bridge in Kozhikode district.
