Jain Temple

At a distance of just 2 km away from Palakkad railway station, there resides a famous Jain temple, in a place called Jainamedu or Jainimedu. The temple structure with a length of 32 feet and a width of 20 feet is built in granite. The temple stands as an epitome of the cultural and religious harmony in Palakkad. The temple was constructed around 500 years ago at a time when 400 Jain families lived in Palakkad, at present only a few families of the Jain community remain in the district.

This glorious and spiritual pilgrimage center visited by many tourists has the images of Jain Tirthankaras and Yakshinies along with the idols of Chandranathan, Vijayalakshmi, Jwalamohini, Rish Abha Natha, Parswa Nathan and Padmavathi. The holy shrine of this Jain temple is dedicated to Chandraprabha, the Tirthankar of the Jain faith, thus the temple is sometimes referred to as “Chandranatha temple”.

The air of spirituality and austerity of the temple residing on the south banks of River Kalpathy is peculiar for another history. It is believed that Malayalam poet, Kumaranasam, wrote his famous poem “Veenapoovu” or Fallen Flower, in one of the Jain houses in the region. Take your time to visit this temple that proudly showcases the existence of Jainism in our multicultural land.
