The pro-cathedral of Quilon Diocese, Infant Jesus Cathedral, is located in the city of Thangassery, Kollam district. This historically significant Roman Catholic church built in the year of 1614 by Portuguese, was formerly known as “Bom Jesu Church ”. The church is dedicated to St. Francis Xavier, that attracts numerous devotees who seek the blessings of Jesus Christ.
This Roman Catholic Church is still a valuable relic of the Portuguese rule in ancient India, they have left behind their cultural and religious traditions that still influences the rituals and worships of the church. The magnificent church has its glorious ancient architectures, spacious interiors, vast compounds and colourful glass paintings.
This aesthetically constructed Cathedral is alluring with its walls completed with stained glass paintings and mosaic paintings. Almost all the stained glasses depict different stages of Lord Jesus’s life. The most significant among them is, one, the image of Christ sitting in a lotus position and meditating, the other, is the painting of the patroness of the Diocese of Quilon, Our Lady of Mount Carmel. In addition to the church, there is a small shrine dedicated to Saint Joseph and a bell tower, which has three bells in it. Visit the Cathedral church to experience the serene tranquillity.
