Ilaveezha Poonchira

Ilaveezha poonchira, the magnificent scenic tourist destination in Kerala is located near Kanjar, Kottayam. The valley is surrounded by three glorious hills, Mankunnu, Kodayathoormala, and Thonippara, all around 3200 feet above sea level. Different seasons present the tourist spot in variant forms. Among all, monsoon season is the best to visit ilaveezha poonchira as the valley between the hillocks gets filled up and the mythical pond is alive with streaming water. Apart from the mystical pond, there are small waterfalls and secret alcoves that further enhance the beauty of the place.

The place and its charming landscapes are such an awe-inspiring wonder to our eyes. The valley is also well known for enjoying astonishing sunrises and sunsets. The name “ila-veezha-poonchira” is literally translated as “the pond of flowers where leaves do not fall”. The whole valley is filled with flower beds, and bunds and has no trees at all. The myth relating to it states that, during the forest life of the Pandavas in Mahabharata, their beautiful wide Draupati bathed in this pond. Some of devas were enormously bewitched by her beauty and gave in to their impulses. This enraged Lord Indra and he made hills leaping with flowers to prevent the pond from the external gaze. Thus the pond became isolated with floral hills around its majestic lay.

Since there are no trees around the bund, no leaves are likely to fall into the pond. Thus the name “ila-veezha-poonchira” came into existence. Some people also say that the area is usually very windy thus all the leaves are carried away along with the breeze. With its natural greenery and enchanting flowers, Ilaveezhapoonchira is a must-visit natural beauty in Kottayam.
