Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is among the twelve wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala, stretching for about 77-kilometre squares from Thodupuzha to Udumpanchola taluks in the Idukki district. This wildlife sanctuary is surrounded by the Idukki arch dam and Cheruthoni lake giving an excellent opportunity for the visitors for a calm and serene boat ride. Tourists can enjoy the wildlife, evergreen forests, and bird varieties on this boat ride around the sanctuary. 

One can spot different animals like elephants, bison, sambar deer, jungle cats, tigers, etc. along with some snake varieties like cobras, vipers, kraits, and many other non-poisonous snakes. Woodpeckers, black bulbuls, jungle fowls, laughing thrushes, mynas, kingfisher,s and peafowls are among the species of birds found in Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary. 

This sanctuary is surrounded by others on all four sides, there is Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary on the northern side, Eravikulam National Park on the Southern side, Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary towards the northwest and Kodaikanal Wildlife Sanctuary in the east. This is surely a slice of heaven that needs to be enjoyed in all its fullness. The best time to visit the sanctuary is between December to April. Elephants are mainly spotted in the dry seasons.
