Idukki Arch dam

Idukki Arch Dam

Idukki Arch Dam, the highest dam in all of Asia, is about 550 feet high and spread for about 650 feet in length. It is precisely a double curvature arch dam built across the Periyar River as part of the Idukki hydroelectric project taken up by the Kerala state government. The dam is built in between two magnificent granite hills known as Kuravan and Kurathi. This dam, in proximity to the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, is such an awe-inspiring spot with its glory and majesty.

This spectacular view makes us forget everything else, thus it is a perfect getaway not only for the tourists but also for the local people in the region. It is one of the very few parabolic double curvature arch dams ever built in India. This dam was built along with the Cheruthoni and Kulamavu dams as part of the same project to produce electricity in the Moolamattom powerhouse. All three dams together have created an artificial lake that spreads about 60 square km.

As part of hydel tourism, there are boating facilities allowed through the river, which is such a breathtaking moment. The forest and the greenery surrounding the dam, host many species of flora and fauna. About one kilometer away from the dam, there is a small cave where one of the famous Malayalam movies, Vaishali, scenes were shot. Thus, the cave came to be known as the Vaishali cave. Many visitors who come to visit the dam take an effort to reach the cave as well. Experience the beauty of Idukki Arch Dam, which is rare to be found in all of Asia, to its fullest. It’s definitely worth your time and effort. Remember to capture the moments down your memory line as photographs are not allowed within.
