Eravikulam National park, also known as Rajamalai National Park, is located on the Kannan Devan Hills in Munnar, Idukki. It is the only wildlife sanctuary with a view of grasslands and tea plantations in the surrounding area. Eravikulam National Park is exclusively dedicated to the preservation of the most endangered mountain goats, Nilgiri Tahrs. One can see numerous Nilgiri Tahrs grazing in the grasslands, in a place exclusively made for their protection. Nilgiri marten, ruddy mongoose, elephants, Nilgiri langur, leopards and Nilgiri wood pigeons are among the other species of fauna found in the National park.
Eravikulam National Park, being the highly protected area, is divided mainly into three regions: the core area, the buffer area and the tourism area. Core and buffer areas are not open for the public, whereas tourism areas that include the Rajamalai region can be visited by tourists. Rajamalai region can give the best vision of Nilgiri Tahrs. The second highest peak in India after the Himalayas, the Anamudi peak, stands with all its glory in the centre of Eravikulam National Park.
Visitors can also see the Lakkom waterfalls cascading down the hills in grandeur within the park. Once in all twelve years, the grasslands of Eravikulam National Park are filled with blue carpet, the Neelakurinji Flowers. A huge number of tourists visited the park in 2018 to see Neelakurinji and the next blooming of the flower is dated in 2030. In addition to the amazing views, trekking and nature walks are allowed within the region by the tourism department of Munnar.
