Preserving Tribal Identity & Protecting Ancestral Traditions

Kerala’s first Tribal Heritage Village, En Ooru is an ethnographic gallery that showcases ethnicity, cultural practices, tribal social organization, ancestral traditions, tribal art, and cultural expressions.

En Ooru Tribal Heritage Village Pookode plays a significant role in the tribal cultural demonstration. The centre of attraction at the village is prototype tribal huts that offer a glance at tribal lifestyle and tribal architecture. One the most serene tourist destination in India, Wayanad hosts this tribal village and narrates ancestral stories and tribal law and justice.

The Village beacons visitors with extensive infrastructure facilities and nature-friendly tribal hamlets. The 10-crore project implemented Departments of Scheduled Tribes Development & Tourism aims to have product stalls to introduce tribal medicines, tribal handicrafts, and other tribal products to visitors, An amphitheatre at the village is the platform for performing tribal art forms including tribal music, Thudi Thalam, and ancestral customs.

The Kerala Government is on a mission to upgrade the village to a heritage site by showcasing ethnic diversity and rural culture. Attempts to promote indigenous languages used by ethnic minorities and display of tribal economy support the livelihood of the tribals of Wayanad.

A home to tribal communities in Kerala, En Ooru Tribal Heritage Village district is a unique platform in India to explore tribal culture and tradition. The village, designed to highlight tribal architecture and indigenous culture, showcases the life of tribal communities and exhibits tribal products. Established on 25 acres of land previously owned by Priyadarshini Tea Estate (Mananthavady Tea Plantation Co-operative Society) has emerged as the face of Wayanad. Collaborating with culinary experts from the tribal communities, the village serves traditional tribal food through the cafeteria helping the people experience the cuisine of the tribal people.

ATTRACTIONS

Children’s Park

Tourists reaching the Tribal Heritage Village will no longer have to worry about the entertainment of their children. A children’s park with a naturally crafted play area will be opened soon to entertain the kids reaching the village. Children will get an experience of traditional games and villages once the park becomes a reality. This innovative children’s park will be constructed considering the architectural pattern followed in the Heritage Village.

Heritage Walk Way

The culture of Wayanad remains incomplete unless the tourists get an opportunity to view the wall paintings and sculptures. To offer a complete experience in tribal heritage, the Government is planning to set up a heritage walkway to showcase the sculptures, paintings, and architecture of indigenous tribes in Kerala. Visitors can take a stroll along the walkway and understand the history of the community.

Tribal Interpretation Centre

Learning and experiencing tribal tradition will soon become effortless as a Tribal Interpretation Centre is coming up in the Village. Tribal artefacts and architecture will find a place at the Centre. The officials will prepare a historical storyline for each exhibit and narrate the ancestral history to the visitors. The centre will help students and researchers learn accurate details about the community.

Art & Craft Workshop

Tribal tradition is closely linked to tribal handicrafts. From the ornaments, they wear to the bamboo products they make for a living fall under the category of artifacts. Art and Craft workshops are planned at En Ooru Tribal Heritage Village to help the visitors learn the basics of tribal craft works. Live sessions on manufacturing and designing traditional craft items are sure to entertain and educate the tourists. Visitors from all over Kerala will benefit from the Art and Craft workshop.
