Chinakkathoor Bhagavathy temple located in Palappuram, 5 km away from Ottapalam in Palakkad district, resides magnificently in the midst of a huge ground. The temple comprises two shrines, Thazhekkavu (lower shrine) with Namboothiri priests and Melekkavu (Upper Shrine) with Nair priests to do the poojas and rituals. Apart from these two shrines, there is another one near to the iconic Bunyan tree dedicated to Lord Vigneshwara (Ganapathy).
The annual festival of the temple Chinakkathoor Pooram Festival is a much-celebrated grand gala of the Palakkad district. The festival takes place around February- March. Almost on all the evenings of the festive days, many traditional and cultural programmes are held such as Vellattu, Theyyam, Poothanum thirayum, Kaalavela, Kuthiravela, Aandi Vedan, Karivela etc. A shadow puppet show, Tholppavakkoothu, is conducted every evening for the preceding 17 days till the last day of the Pooram festival.
The grand procession on the Pooram day with about 28 caparisoned tuskers, 16 heavily decorated horse effigies, and colorful bull effies along the streets of Palakkad with traditional orchestra, Chenda melam, and dancing devotees is a great sight to witness. Chinakkathoor pooram and the ancient temple with its stunning architectural patterns is really captivating. It stays in your mind forever.
