Banasura Sagar Dam

In the outskirts of Wayanad district, in the midst of Banasura hills, there lies a beautiful reservoir, Banasura Sagar Dam. It is well renowned as the largest earthen dam in Indian and the second largest in Asia. The dam with its astounding views of the valleys downhill, rising mountain ranges, streams, rich varieties of flora and fauna is indeed a paradise for nature lovers. The hills were named after the son of King Mahabali, Banasura. For the adventurous tourists out there, trekking trails are available for your lovely weekend. Speed boats and other boat services along the serene waters of the reservoir is a rejuvenating experience altogether.

You can see tiny islands in the lake, as the dam was built adjoining the surrounding areas. The dam is built across Karamanathodu, a major offspring of Kabani river. The dam was part of the Indian Banasura Sagar Project of constructing a dam and a canal system for meeting the irrigation demands of the people near the region. Along with fulfilling its purposes, the dam offers the best magnificent views of the lush greenery, hills, streams, valleys, waterfalls etc. It is an ideal picnic spot for all people who are fond of nature and natural wonders. It is sure to steal your heart in a way that you least expected.
