Ayyappancoil Hanging Bridge

This huge hanging bridge in the village of Ayyappancoil, also called Ayyappan Kovil, is situated 15 km away from Kattappana in the Idukki district. Across river Periyar, this hanging bridge is a beauty in the air that can be enjoyed by families and friends alike. This village was once said to be a township that was evacuated by the Kerala government upon the Idukki hydroelectric project. When it became difficult for the tribal communities to transport across the river Ayyappancoil hanging bridge was constructed over the river.

The hanging bridge being one of the longest in Kerala stretches itself to connect Ayyappancoil Grama Panchayath and Kanchiyar Grama Panchayath on either side of the river. The village got its name from the famous Sastha temple located on the banks of river Periyar dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. It is believed to be one of the five temples built by Parasuram. There are boat services available for the devotees to reach the temple and the tourists to take a warm and pleasurable boat ride within the refreshing waters of Periyar.

An exciting stroll on the bridge is a varied experience altogether, when more people get on board the bridge will sway and the people are thrilled with the swaying of happiness. One can also enjoy a glorious view of the greenery around, the mountains up high, and the water flowing down below. Yet, this amazing spot remains an unexplored and untouched beauty in the midst of nature. Explore the bridge and unwind your worries for a better day.
