Maramon, the small town on the banks of river Pampa in Pathanamthitta, is famous for the Maramon Convention held every year. Maramon convention is Asia’s largest Christian gathering that usually takes place during the first week of lent, most probably in February. This eight-day convention is conducted by the missionaries of Mar Thoma Evangelistic Association (META), the missionary wish of Mar Thoma Church.
During the convention, Christians from different parts of the country and abroad come together to attend prayers, bible studies, preachings, public meetings, seminars etc. The sand bed on the banks of river Pampa is maintained and decorated for Maramon convention. A special panthal is arranged to accommodate around 2 lakhs people who are expected to arrive for the special gathering.
The first Maramon convention was held for 10 days from March 8 to 17 in 1895. The beginning of this convention can be traced back to the great revival movement and the reformation in the ancient Syrian Church of Malabar under the leadership of Abraham Malpan. This convention further strengthened the Apostle church of Kerala founded by St. Thomas during A.D 52.
