Thirumandhamkunnu Temple

Thirumandhamkunnu temple dedicated to “Thirumandhamkunnil Amma”, Goddess Parvati, is situated in Angadipuram in Malappuram district. The preceding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva and the annual pooram festival is celebrated with much grandeur and procession to the river with decorated tuskers and dancing devotees. The temple is quite famous for its Mangalya Pooja, for all the troubles and problems relating to marriage, for obtaining suitable matches and so on. It is believed that Mangalya pooja is very powerful and has to be completed with three separate visits to the temple each subsequent year. All the devotees must complete the cycle even if they got married after the first or second pooja.

The major deities of the temple are Lord Shiva, Parvathi, Bhadrakali and Little Ganesha and there is a fascinating legend behind the origin of the temple. King Mandhata of the Surya dynasty was a follower of Lord Shiva. Once the lord appeared before him and asked for a boon. The king requested a Shivaling and the lord agreed to it. Upon coming back from bath Goddess Parvati was upset over her husband as Shivaling was very precious to her. She along with Goddess Bhadrakali and Bhoothas came to the temple but couldn’t take it as it was strongly attached to the ground. At last, Parvati entered Shivaling as she can’t be away from it. Since then Goddess Parvati, Kali and Unni Ganapathy were worshipped together in the temple.

Devotees fondly offer ada, payasam, banana and appam to Uni Ganapathy as they are his favourites. A visit to the heavenly abode of these Gods and Goddesses is certainly an auspicious occasion that would be cherished for a lifetime.
