Varakkal Devi Temple

Varakkal Devi Temple dedicated to Goddess Durga is believed to be the 108th temple, the last temple built by Lord Parasuram, the mythical founder of Kerala who retrieved the land from the depths of the ocean. Legend says that he continued to plough the land until the Goddess appeared to him. Even though the temple is enshrined by Goddess Durga, other deities such as Lord Ganapathy, Sree Ayyappan and Dakshinamoorthi are worshipped in the temple.

It is believed that upon the establishment of the temple many devotees came for worship and abandoned the shrine after years. It was the Zamorins that took control and renovated the temple in a new way drawing devotees back to the shrine. The major festival celebrated in the temple is Vavu Bali on the full moon day of the month Thulam, on this auspicious day believers come to perform rituals and poojas for their deceased ones. The Bali Tharpanam is conducted on the shores of Varakkal Beach.

Navaratri is the other festival celebrated in the temple with much enthusiasm and grandeur. This temple was also known for promoting arts and cultural activities in the Malabar regions centuries ago, the fervour still pertains to the thriving artists of Malabar region.
