Matri Dei Cathedral

The Latin word “Matri Dei Cathedra” means “Mother of God”. The church built in 1513 is located on the beach road in Kozhikode district. The church is much famous among the tourists for its varied Roman style of Architecture. The story behind the construction of the church is that in 1513, Zamorins entered a treaty with the Portuguese people regarding the construction of a church dedicated to the Immaculate Mother of Conception.

Many talented Italian architects were brought by the Portuguese to build this Gothic Style Roman structure. The curved arches above the doors and windows, the colonnade on the spires, the stunning combination of white and brown adorn for the interiors of the church etc. showcases the aesthetic beauty of Italian architects completed with the help of skilled Indian workers. At present this church is the major centre of Roman Catholic Congregation in Malabar region. 

Another important attraction of the church is the 200 years old portrait of Mother Mary with Infant Jesus in her hands. Visit Matri Dei Cathedral dedicated to Mother Mary to receive her blessings and to witness this architectural splendour.
