In the vicinity of Vadakara, in Memunda there exists one of the most ancient temples in Kerala believed to have built-in 500 A.D. This glorious temple in Kozhikode district is very much mentioned and referred to in the ballads of North Kerala, Vadakkan Pattukal. Many of the heroes and heroines of these ballads were ardent followers of Lokanarkavu Bhagavathy especially Thacholi Othenan, the hero of martial arts is believed to have visited the temple every day.
Thus, the temple is closely associated with Kalaripayattu, all the trainees come here after their training for the blessings of Goddess Durga. Legend says that the temple was built by the Aryan Brahmins who shifted to this place and the Bhagavathy seems to have followed them here. The temple is so full of mural paintings, actual ancient colourful paintings that attracts many tourists to this temple complex. These centuries-old paintings depict the Gods and Goddesses. The collection also includes erotic ones, rarely seen in Northern temples.
Lokanarkavu temple celebrates two festivals with pomposity. 41 day long Mandala Utsavam that takes place in the month of Vrischika is one of the major festivals. During which a special art form very similar to Kalaripayattu, “Thacholikali” is performed in the evenings. This unique performance and the lighted temple is such a treat to the eyes that devotees flock in to witness.
In the month of April, the Meenam festival is celebrated. This 8-day long festival has numerous celebrations, rituals and cultural performances assigned for each day. Festival starts with kodiyettam and on the 5th and 6th day a special dance performance called “Theyyambadi Kurup’” is conducted. The grand procession and pallivetta happen on the seventh day and Poorakali and Poorapattu are organised on the final day of the festival.
Each and every day of the festival is celebrated with much enthusiasm and excitement. Devotees never fail to attend this ardent worship and celebrations of their favourite deity Lokanarkavilamma.
