Azhakodi Devi Temple is located right at the heart of Kozhikode city in Thiruthiyad. This temple is one of the famous pilgrim centres in the district administered by the Malabar Devaswom Board. The temple, peculiar for its architecture and heritage, is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali in her most calm posture. Apart from the main deity the temple also worships seven maternal incarnations-brahmani, maheshwari, kowmari, vaishnavi, vaarahi, indrani and chamundi. An idol of the Shivalinga is also present within the temple complex.
Till 1965 the temple was known by the name “Arikkodikkavu” later changed into “Azhakodi Devi Mahakshethram”. This temple is the only one in all Kerala with two presiding Devis. The legend behind it says that Samoothiri has received an idol of Bhavani Devi from the Gujarati traders and he entrusted six of his generals to enshrine the idol of Bhavani Devi right next to the Bhagavathy Idol. Since then the sanctum was the house for two goddesses.
The annual festival of the temple takes place in the Malayalam month of Meedam. The nine day festival starts with Kodiyeetam on the “Uthrattathi Nakshatra” followed by Pallivetta on the “Thiruvathira Nakshatra“, and Arrattu on the “Punartham Nakshathram“. Visit this Bhagavathy temple for the historical, religious and cultural significance it has on our Hindu culture.
