Kumaranalloor Bhagavathy Temple

Kumaranalloor, a town at a distance of 4 km from Kottayam, is famous for the Bhagavathy Temple located there. The place is famous for Kumaranallor Devi or Goddess Bhagavathy in five different forms including Saraswathi, Lakshmi, Parvathi, Durga and Vana Durga. The temple spreading across an area of at least 15000 square meters is about 2400 years old, built around the rule of Cheraman Perumal. Kumaranalloor Bhagavathy Temple is one among the 108 Durgalayas (Devi Temples) spread across the whole Kerala.

The temple is quite notable among the tourists for its architectural pattern of nalambalam and sreekovil. It is believed that as equivalent to the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, Kumaranalloor Temple was also constructed by Lord Parashuram. The place before the existence of the temple was called “Thingalkkadu”. The current name owes to the name of Kumaranalloor Devi, as part of a vision given to a priest where Goddess revealed that this temple was supposed to be “Kumaran Alla Ooril”, which means that the temple is not for Kumaran but for Kumari or Devi’s abode. Because the temple was under construction for enshrining Lord Subramanian or Kumaran, which after the vision enshrined Goddess Bhagavathy.

The most important festival of the temple is Thrikkarthika Utsavam celebrated in the month of Vrischikam (November/December). During the festival, it is necessary to do offerings at Udayanapuram and Thrissur Vadakkumnatha Temple premises. The myth says that the gods of these temples were intimidated by the beauty of Devi, and they have crossed the walls to get a glimpse of her. The priests in their respective temples searched for their presiding deities and found them here. Since then, Karthika poojas are performed over the walls. The major highlight of the festival is the dazzling lights known as Karthika Vilakku. Visit Kumaranalloor Bhagavathy Temple to attain solace and peace of mind.
