Pattazhy Devi Temple

One of the ancient temples in Kerala, Pattazhy Devi temple is located in Pathanapuram Taluk in Kollam District. This heritage temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy, built on the exact spot where Devi’s apparition was seen. The legend behind the temple says that the land was a plantain farm belonging to an ancient family. Once a beautiful woman appeared before the head of the family and disappeared after leaving a deep well and a red silk saree (chumala pattu). Immediately a throne was built on top of the well and eventually after many years, Pattazhy Devi temple was beautifully constructed above the well.

“Patt” means “soft” and “azhy” means “ocean”, combining together to form the Malayalam Portmanteau, Pattazhy, which denotes the ocean of compassion and care bestowed by Devi to her loving devotees. The annual festival of Pattazhy Devi temple is called Thirumudi festival celebrated on the thiruvathira day of Meenam (Mid March – Mid- April). During the end of the festival, the idol of the Goddess is taken out for a procession. There is Aalpindi Vilakku Ezhunnallathu, a procession in which small structures built with plantains and tender coconut tree leaves with glittering lamps are carried by the devotees alongside the idol of Goddess.

Devi’s ponnin thirumudi (golden headgear), made of gold and precious stones is a beautiful attraction much appraised by the tourists and worshippers. Visit Pattazhy Devi temple, offer prayers and poojas to please Goddess Bhagavathi for eternal blessings.
